Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add the egg and vanilla extract to the butter mixture and mix until combined.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing just until incorporated.
  6. Stir in the sour cream until the dough forms a soft ball.
  7. Divide the dough in half, flatten into disks, wrap in plastic wrap, and chill for at least 1 hour.
  8. Roll out one disk on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4-inch thickness.
  9. Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out cookies and place them on the prepared baking sheets.
  10. Bake for 8–10 minutes, until the edges are set but not hard.
  11. Allow cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
  12. Optionally, dust with powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

For a festive touch, decorate the cookies with melted white or pink chocolate after cooling.
