German Mulled Wine Gluhwein is a warm, spiced red wine perfect for chilly evenings and festive gatherings, infused with aromatic spices and citrus.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 bottle (750ml) dry red wine
  • 1 orange, sliced
  • 8 whole cloves
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 2 star anise
  • 4 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • Fresh lemon zest for garnish

Instructions

  1. Combine sugar and water in a saucepan over medium heat and stir until sugar dissolves to make a simple syrup.
  2. Add the cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise, and orange slices to the syrup; simmer for 5 minutes to infuse spices.
  3. Pour in the red wine and heat gently until warm but do not boil, about 10 minutes.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract if using.
  5. Strain to remove spices and orange slices.
  6. Serve hot, garnished with fresh lemon zest.

Notes

For a richer flavor, let the spices steep in the wine overnight in the refrigerator and reheat gently before serving.
