Homemade Green Bean Casserole

This classic Homemade Green Bean Casserole features fresh green beans baked in a creamy mushroom sauce and topped with crispy fried onions for a comforting and flavorful side dish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound fresh green beans, trimmed and cut into 2-inch pieces
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 1/2 cups crispy fried onions

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Blanch the green beans for 3-4 minutes until tender-crisp, then drain and set aside.
  3. In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the mushrooms and cook until browned and soft, about 5-6 minutes.
  4. Add the minced garlic and cook for another 1 minute until fragrant.
  5. Sprinkle the flour over the mushrooms and stir to combine. Cook for 1-2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.
  6. Slowly whisk in the heavy cream and milk, stirring constantly until the sauce thickens, about 4-5 minutes.
  7. Stir in the soy sauce, salt, and black pepper.
  8. In a casserole dish, combine the blanched green beans with the creamy mushroom sauce.
  9. Top the casserole with 1 cup of crispy fried onions.
  10. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes until bubbly and golden on top.
  11. Remove from the oven and sprinkle with the remaining fried onions before serving.

Notes

For extra flavor, try adding a sprinkle of shredded cheddar cheese on top before baking or use fresh shallots instead of fried onions for a different texture.
